St. Joseph's Indian School
Under the leadership of Father Stephen Huffstetter, St. Joseph's Indian School is a place where young Lakota children can learn in a safe and loving environment. The privately-owned school operates solely through the donations of supporters throughout the world. No tuition is charged and St. Joseph's provides for all the needs of more than 200 students. The Lakota culture is held in high regards at the school and is incorporated in daily events. Students on the campus are actively involved in drum groups and powwow ceremonies. Every September, St. Joseph's has their annual American Indian Day and Powwow. Cultural art workshops and demonstrations take place on Friday, and Saturday is filled with campus tours and powwow dancing. More information regarding St. Joseph's upcoming powwow.
Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center
Open all year, sharing the culture, is Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center found on St. Joseph's Indian School campus. The museum offers educational opportunities to students and the general public through vivid displays, accurate presentations and useful resources. Free to the public, the museum displays original works by Oscar Howe, Arthur Amiotte,Daniel Long Soldier and more. More information on the Museum and its hours of operation.
South Dakota Hall of Fame
The South Dakota Hall of Fame's mission is to recognize and honor pioneers and leaders from all walks of life who have contributed to the development and heritage of South Dakota. To date, the Hall of Fame has 620 inductees. In June of 2000 the South Dakota Hall of Fame set up residence in their new 10,000 square foot building in Chamberlain. The building is located right off I-90, Exit 263, overlooking the beautiful Missouri River. It provides a magnificent showcase for the people of South Dakota.
Lewis and Clark Information Center
Located on I-90, Exit 264, the Lewis and Clark Information Center provides an in-depth look at the infamous journey of Lewis and Clark and their accounts of the adventures they had in South Dakota. Complete with a 55-ft. keelboat positioned on the front of the building, the center displays everything from journal excerpts to re-creations of the campsites. Admission is free. During the summer months the center is staffed with travel counselors who are there to answer your questions and guide you through your journey of South Dakota. They welcome group tours as well as school field trips.
