Community Cluster Initiative

The Chamberlain-Oacoma Area of South Dakota to participate in 'governance' pilot project

The Rural Governance Initiative, a program of the Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI), has been exploring how rural people and institutions make decisions about their collective well being, in other words, the process of governance. 'Governance' is not only the good management practices of governments. It's also includes a variety of sound decisions-making and implementing practices by a wide range of people, organizations and institutions beyond government: non-profit groups, faith-based organizations, community foundations, citizen's alliances, community colleges, business associations, and others. Simply put, governance is about how choices are made and carried through, and who has a say.

The Rural Governance Initiative is leading a Community Clustering Initiative, (CCI) to test the RGI's principles of effective governance in 3 multi-community clusters in the rural northwest. The CCI will conduct an assessment of the value of these principles, especially community people from other sectors-civic, business and youth. The initiative's primary objective is to influence rural government leaders to place citizen engagement and poverty reduction higher on their list of priorities.
